The franchise was founded in 1917 when they were originally known as the Toronto Arenas. In 1919 they changed their name to the Toronto St. Patricks and then the franchise was sold in 1927 and was renamed the Toronto Maple Leafs. They are one of the “Original Six” National Hockey League (NHL) teams along with the Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins and New York Rangers. The last time the Leafs won the Stanley Cup was in 1967 and as a result they own the distinction of owning the longest drought between championships, 48 years.
