The Edmonton Oilers were founded in 1972 and were originally known as the Alberta Oilers when they were one of twelve teams in the Western Hockey Association (WHA). They changed their name to the Edmonton Oilers the next year and have had that name ever since. The Edmonton Oilers joined the NHL in 1979. The Oilers have had many Hall of Fame players over the years, most notably, Wayne Gretzky, who was traded to the Los Angeles Kings in 1988 in a blockbuster trade.
