The Arizona Coyotes were founded in 1972, and were originally known as the Winnipeg Jets of the World Hockey Association (WHA). The Winnipeg Jets played in the WHA from 1972 – 1979 and then they were one of four teams who were absorbed into the National Hockey League (NHL) on June 22, 1979. The Winnipeg Jets played in Winnipeg from 1979 – 1996 and then in 1996 the team moved to Phoenix and were renamed the Phoenix Coyotes. They played as the Phoenix Coyotes from 1996 – 2014 and then in 2014 they changed their name to the Arizona Coyotes and have had that name ever since.
